Forced Learning vs. Passion Projects: How do *you* learn best?
Hey everyone! 👋
I stumbled across an interesting quote today from Plato: ‘Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion obtains no hold on the mind.’ It got me thinking about career development and how we approach learning new skills for our jobs or job searches. 🤔
Are we more likely to truly absorb and utilize knowledge when we're genuinely interested and driven by passion, or when we're forced to learn something because it's required for a role or certification? Think back to your own experiences. Did you find online courses you took because your boss told you to less impactful than, say, diving deep into a coding language you found fascinating? 👨💻👩💻
Sometimes, "forced learning" is unavoidable. We need certain certifications, or our company mandates training on specific software. But I wonder if there's a way to reframe that mandatory learning into something more engaging. Can we find a small element of passion within the requirement? 🤔 Perhaps connecting it to a larger career goal we have?
On the flip side, passion projects can be amazing for skill development and portfolio building! They demonstrate initiative and a genuine interest in your field. But, sometimes, the structured learning environment of a formal course can be more effective for grasping foundational knowledge.
What are your thoughts? How do you balance the need for "forced learning" with the power of passion projects in your career growth? Share your experiences and tips! Let’s learn from each other! 📚
